In Tunisia’s 2024 presidential election, the voter turnout has been notably low, reaching only 14.16% by midday on October 6, 2024. By this point, approximately 1.38 million voters had cast their ballots from a pool of over 9.75 million registered voters. Additionally, the turnout for Tunisians voting abroad stood at 10%, with around 64,315 participants.
The Independent High Authority for Elections (ISIE) attributed the slow turnout partly to some delays in the use of a new electronic tracking system, though the issue was quickly addressed. Despite the low domestic turnout, some regions reported higher participation, and overseas voters accounted for a significant portion. The final voter turnout is expected to be announced later in the day.
The election is seen as a critical juncture for Tunisia’s democracy as the country navigates economic challenges and political reform.
Results are anticipated soon after the closure of polling stations, with the ISIE promising updates in a timely manner.
