Ons Jabeur, 29, added on Friday that she feels « very sad when I watch the news every day, and honestly, I avoid being on social media because what is happening in Gaza right now is a horrifying reel. »
The Tunisian player’s remarks came during a press conference after reaching the Round of 16 at Roland Garros, the second Grand Slam tournament in tennis.
The player, who has reached the finals of a Grand Slam three times, continued, « I hope the world talks more because what is happening is unfair. These children, women, and men are suffering. We are in 2024, and it is extremely sad to see so many countries remain silent about what is happening. »
Ons had become a Goodwill Ambassador for the United Nations World Food Programme « to participate in various initiatives, including one focused on the emergency situation in Gaza, » according to the organization at the time.
